High-Performance ECE 22.06 Motorcycle Safety Helmets
Motorcycling is a thrilling experience, but without the right safety gear, it can turn into a disaster in no time. Whenever you gear up for a ride, your safety depends on how much you trust the helmet on your head. But do you really trust the helmet you wear? The answer depends on the type of helmet you own.
That’s where safety standards become crucial. If you want greater safety and confidence on the road, there is a new European Safety Standard known as ECE 22.06 Helmets. This standard requires rigorous testing of helmets, including crash testing at 18 impact points, before they are sold.
Ride Beyond the Standard with ECE 22.06 Helmets
All helmets in this collection are ECE certified, the safety mark that mandates independent laboratory testing before a single unit can be sold. That’s an important difference. The US DOT standard is self-certification by the manufacturer, whereas under ECE 22.06, helmets crash tested by an accredited European technical service, which issues the approval.
The helmet on your head either passed or it didn’t, and that was a lab decision.
Daniel Smart MFG has been making motorcycle gear since 1975. Our helmet collection has been updated to the ECE standard as revised to version 22.06 – the first major revision in over two decades. If you are someone who likes security, confidence, and peace of mind when riding, this is a definite choice for you.

ECE 22.06 Helmet Standard Explained
ECE is the Economic Commission for Europe. The organization has been setting helmet safety rules for European markets since 1972. The current version is the best motorcycle helmet, ECE 22.06. It replaced ECE 22.05 and has been mandatory for all newly approved helmets as of January 2024. This ECE motorcycle helmet certification is required by law for use on the road in more than 50 countries.
What makes it different from its predecessor is the scope.
ECE 22.05 motorcycle helmets require helmets to be impacted at six fixed impact locations, at a single test speed. Manufacturers knew exactly where the hits would come down.
-
The whole shell is tested at 18 random locations in the ECE 22.06 test at three different speeds (6, 7.5, and 8.2 m/s), so there are no zones to reinforce silently and leave thin elsewhere.
-
It also adds rotational acceleration testing, a 45-degree angled impact that creates the twisting forces on the brain most associated with concussion.
-
Visor, chin bar on full-face helmets, retention system, and any integrated accessories (e.g., Bluetooth communicators) are tested separately.
Only after all of those tests will the manufacturer be allowed to ship a single ECE-rated motorcycle helmet with that E-mark on the strap.
DOT vs. ECE Helmet Certification - The Key Differences
Both of these certifications are there to help keep you safe. Knowing the difference between DOT and ECE helmets can help you determine how much trust to place in each.

How to Confirm ECE Motorcycle Helmet Certification
It's one thing to trust that your helmet has passed the tests, but being able to check it yourself? That gives you a whole new level of confidence, one that doesn’t just depend on someone else’s assurance.
-
Every ECE-approved helmet carries an E-mark on the chin strap, a circled E followed by a country code and an approval string.
-
An ECE-certified helmet reads something like E1 22-06 / XXXX-1234: E1 is the issuing country (Germany), 22-06 is the standard version, and the trailing characters identify the specific batch approval.
-
If the strap label shows 22-05, the helmet meets the previous standard and is still road-legal in ECE markets. If it shows 22-06, it meets the current and stricter requirement.
DOT and ECE-approved helmets carry both the DOT sticker on the exterior rear shell and the E-mark on the strap. Two marks, two distinct sets of tests, one helmet.
ECE 22.06 Motorcycle Helmet Standard At Daniel Smart MFG
Riding really is a personal journey. The gear you pick out says a lot about how much you care about the ride and getting back home in one piece. At Daniel Smart MFG, we take that to heart, and that’s exactly what the helmets in this collection are designed for.

FAQs
Are my ECE 22.05 motorcycle helmets still legal?
Yes! ECE 22.05 helmets are still perfectly fine to use in the UK and EU, while ECE 22.06 is for the newer approvals. If your helmet is getting old or showing signs of wear, it's a good idea to replace it.
Do ECE 22.06 helmets reduce injury risk?
Yes. Motorcycle helmets ECE 22.06 undergo tougher testing, including angled impacts that more accurately mimic real-life crashes. This means they're a safer option for lowering the chances of injury.
What is the best motorcycle helmet for ECE 22.06 helmets for accident prevention?
The best ECE-certified motorcycle helmet really depends on what fits you well and matches your riding style. If you want the most protection, go for a full-face helmet. If you prefer something a bit more convenient, a modular helmet might be the way to go. For more casual rides, an open-face helmet could do the trick.
