Daytona 200 – Take a Walk in the History
The Daytona 200, which celebrates its 83rd birthday in 2025, has a rich history and has been won by many well-known figures in the motorcycle industry.
The first race was staged in 1937 as a beach race on dirt bikes, but as the event increased in popularity, it was moved to the International Speedway in 1961, two years after the circuit's opening.
The transition to the Daytona International Speedway also saw a shift from dirt bikes to grand prix racing motorbikes, resulting in what is now known as the Daytona 200. The infield circuit was also developed at this time due to safety concerns about motorbikes exploiting the 31-degree banking.
Concerns about the circuit, particularly its banking, were heightened following Barry Sheene's world-famous accident in 1975, in which his rear tire failed at almost 170 mph.
As the speeds of Grand Prix motorcycles increased, race organizers decided in 1985 to limit participation to superbikes.
At the time, doubters stated that the transition to slower 750cc Superbikes had wrecked the Daytona 200, but by the turn of the century, the Superbikes had evolved into 1000cc, four-stroke "hyperbikes," and nearly all of the OEMs were back in the event.
In 2005, the Speedway decreed that Superbikes be replaced by "mini-Superbikes" in the Formula Xtreme class. Again, many predicted the death of the Daytona 200, but as has been the case in the past, the "Great American Motorcycle Race"'s doom was grossly exaggerated.
In recent years, the Daytona 200 has remained a 600cc race while it transitioned from Formula Xtreme to Daytona SportBike to Supersport forms.
In 2009, superbikes were removed from the event, with racers only allowed to race supersport machines across the 200-mile route, and these rules have remained in effect to this day.

Prices have yet to be determined, but they will almost probably be in US dollars, and based on recent experience, you can pay with a credit card and enjoy all the fun.
